Israeli photojournalist Natan Dvir has found an exciting new way to use photography. For his new project, "18," he asked i8-year-old Palestinians to pose for him in a place and way of their choosing. They choose the pose, and any material clues to their identity. These images give a rich picture of the attitudes of young Palestinians toward their Israeli neighbors. See the exhibit through Jan. 28 at the Laurie M. Tisch gallery in the Jewish Community Center of Manhattan.

Songwriter and animator Chad VanGaalen is one of my favorite Canadians. (They walk amongst us.) These days there's more of him to love, because he's unleashed Black Mold on the world, his freeform-electro-glitch-plus-clarinets-loving alter ego. The new album is called Snow Blindness is Crystal Antz and its awesome. Did I mention he's an animator as well as a musician? Because that's really the point I'm trying to get across here, so check out his latest tripped out video.
We invited Julia Rothman to the American Folk Art Museum in New York to draw influence from their show, Up Close: Henry Darger and the Coloring Book. We then asked Julia to create an original piece based on her viewing the exhibition. The pattern-designer, illustrator, and expert muser manufactured a fantastic response. See her Darger-inspired work on page 85 of this issue of Tokion.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Desert Boot, Clarks Originals have created six new and unique designs—three for women and three for men. Combining attention to detail with craftsmanship and passion for quality materials, there's a look inspired by each of the six decades the Desert Boot has spent as an essential fashion item. I can't help but imagine what it might be like to see Nathan Clark himself running around in a pair of those swinging Liberty Print boots. Here's to 6 decades of crepe soles.
About a month or two ago, I stopped by the PF Flyers press preview. I was taking a tour of all of their collections and when I spotted the Astor high-tops I was hooked. The new line of Astors are sequin printed, a cool new method that PF Flyers are using to give their shoes a special look. The black Astors, in particular, caught my eye, and I've been sweating them ever since. They are just starting to go into production, and they don't come out until February, but I just thought I'd give you a heads up on these. I know I'm ready to rock them when they come out!
